Pub Awards


The branch makes up to four awards each year. Most branches have award schemes for their local pubs and these vary throughout the country. The format we chose was to award certificates under four different criteria.

  • In the Spring we choose the Most Improved Pub of the year, or Best Food Pub of the Year or any other criterion.
  • In the Summer we pick a Country Pub / Summer Pub of the year or Greatest Contribution to Real Ale.
  • In the Autumn we choose either a Cider Pub or a Micropub of the year.
  • In the Winter we choose the Pub of the year for the following year. This pub is then put forward as a candidate for the regional Pub of the Year.

Previously known as the Pack Horse, bought by Blue Monkey in 2012, the pub received a top to-bottom renovation, uncovering lots of interesting original features.

New stable bar at the back, reflecting the pub’s past life as a coaching inn.

Eight cask ales are always available.

Choice of four real ciders sometimes including a perry, as well as Belgian bottled beers.

Bar snacks include interesting range of pork pies.

CAMRA branch Most Improved Pub 2012, Pub of the Year 2013, and now our Pub of the Year for 2019.

The award was presented to Manager Jed on Tuesday 26th February 2019 by Pubs Officer Phil.

Traditional three-room Castle Rock pub comprising a quiet, traditionally styled lounge, a contemporary styled dining room and a lively bar with a jukebox. A constantly changing range of up to seven guest beers always includes a mild. Real cider, perry, a wide range of continental bottled and draught beers and a good choice of malt whiskies and country wines are also available. Upstairs is the Hop Loft function room and first floor outside terrace.

Built in 1899 by the Great Central Railway, the Manor House was designed to serve passengers arriving at Quorn and Woodhouse Station, which it still does today - the preserved steam- and diesel-hauled trains pass by 150 yards from the door. The building was refurbished in 2005 and now has an open-plan bar and award-winning restaurant with a separate function/meeting room available to hire. A free house, two guest beers are available during the week and three at weekends.
